Bank of America routing number
Bank of America does not have one routing number. It has a different one depending on the state an account was opened in, plus a separate number — 026009593 — that every wire into the bank uses no matter where the account lives. Which one you need depends on how the money is arriving.

Which Bank of America routing number do you need?
Start with the transaction, not the state. Bank of America publishes three routing numbers against every account, and only one is the same for everyone.
| What you are doing | Bank of America’s label | Number |
|---|---|---|
| Direct deposit, automatic payments, ACH transfers | Electronic payment | Varies by state |
| Ordering checks | Paper | Varies by state |
| Domestic and international wires | Wire Transfer | 026009593 |
How to find your own Bank of America routing number
Open the Mobile app
Accounts, pick the receiving account, then tap Account & Routing # to see both numbers.
Or use Online Banking
Accounts, then the Information & Services tab, then Show full account number.
Read a check
The leftmost nine digits along the bottom edge. That is the paper number, which in five regions is not the ACH number.
Ask the account holder
Bank of America tells third parties to verify with the client rather than infer it from a list.
The bank’s own wording is worth repeating: routing numbers are based on the state in which the account was opened, so it may differ from where the account holder now lives. Open in Boston, move to Phoenix, and Massachusetts is still your employer’s number.
Why the number changes from state to state
The Federal Reserve ACH directory this site indexes carries 148 routing numbers under Bank of America, N.A. The bank lists a number for every state and Washington DC, but they are not unique: 051000017 covers twelve states. Florida, Illinois, Missouri and Texas split into regions.
| State | Routing number |
|---|---|
| Massachusetts | 011000138 |
| New York | 021000322 |
| California | 121000358 |
| Texas, North | 111000025 |
| Washington DC | 054001204 |
The leading digits are not arbitrary. Under Regulation CC the first four form the Federal Reserve routing symbol, and the first two identify the Federal Reserve District — 01 is the First District, Boston; 12 is the Twelfth, San Francisco. Hence Massachusetts opens 011 and California opens 121.
Receiving a wire: 026009593, BOFAUS3N and BOFAUS6S
A sender inside the US needs your account number and 026009593, plus your name and address. The cutoff is 5 p.m. Eastern, and a domestic wire is typically credited the same business day.
An international wire is addressed with a SWIFT/BIC code rather than a US routing number, and Bank of America uses two, chosen by currency.
- BOFAUS3N
- US dollars, or unknown currency — 222 Broadway, New York, NY 10038
- BOFAUS6S
- Foreign currency — 555 California St., San Francisco, CA 94104
Incoming wires may cost the recipient $15 each, and an international one is typically credited in one to two business days — both as published in August 2026.
ACH or wire — what should the sender use?
If the money already sits in another US bank account, ACH uses the electronic routing number for the account’s opening state. Bank of America says a domestic wire is typically credited the same business day and charges $30 to send one.
- Same Day ACH is capped at $1 million per payment today, and rises to $10 million on 17 September 2027.
- A wire clears the same business day when it is sent before 5 p.m. Eastern.
- An ACH sender needs the electronic number, which in five regions is not the one printed on the check.
Sending money abroad from a Bank of America account
Going the other way, the routing number stops mattering and the exchange rate starts to.
| Wire type | Transfer fee |
|---|---|
| Domestic | $30 |
| International, foreign currency | No wire transfer fee* |
| International, US dollars | $45 |
The asterisk is the whole story. Bank of America’s own footnote reads: no wire transfer fee, but exchange rate markups apply. The fee line and the cost are not the same figure.
Two more flags from the bank. Some destinations need an identifier beyond the SWIFT code — India’s IFSC, Canada’s transit code, an IBAN, Mexico’s CLABE. Bank of America says wires to Colombia, Nigeria, Panama, Somalia, Timor-Leste, Venezuela and the Palestinian Territories should be sent in US dollars.

Frequently asked questions
What is the routing number for Bank of America?
There is no single one. Bank of America assigns a routing number based on the state where the account was opened — 011000138 in Massachusetts, 021000322 in New York, 121000358 in California. The exception is wires: every Bank of America wire, domestic or international, uses 026009593.
Is the Bank of America routing number the same in every state?
No, but the numbers are not unique per state either. Bank of America lists a number for all 50 states and Washington DC, and several states share one — 051000017 covers twelve, from Alabama to Wyoming. Florida, Illinois, Missouri and Texas are split into named sub-regions, though in Florida, Missouri and Texas the sub-regions differ only in the number printed on checks; the ACH number is the same across the state. Only the wire routing number, 026009593, is identical everywhere.
What routing number do I use for a wire transfer to Bank of America?
Use 026009593 together with the recipient’s account number. It is the wire routing number for every Bank of America account regardless of state. The cutoff is 5 p.m. Eastern, and a domestic wire is typically credited the same business day.
Does Bank of America have a SWIFT code, and do I still need the routing number?
Yes, and no. For an international wire the sender needs a SWIFT code, not a US routing number: BOFAUS3N for wires sent in US dollars or unknown currency (Bank of America, N.A., 222 Broadway, New York, NY 10038), or BOFAUS6S for wires sent in a foreign currency (555 California St., San Francisco, CA 94104).
What is the difference between the paper and electronic routing numbers?
Paper is the number printed on your checks; electronic is the one used for direct deposits, automatic payments and ACH transfers. In most states Bank of America publishes the same number for both. Connecticut, Florida East, Chicago Metro, Missouri West/Kansas City and Texas South are the five exceptions where they differ, so copying the number off a check can misroute a direct deposit.
How much does Bank of America charge for wires?
As published on bankofamerica.com in August 2026: incoming wires may incur $15 per wire; an outgoing domestic wire is $30; an outgoing international wire sent in US dollars is $45; and an outgoing international wire sent in a foreign currency carries no wire transfer fee, though the bank notes that exchange rate markups apply.
Why doesn’t my Bank of America routing number match the state I live in?
Because it follows the account, not the address. Bank of America assigns the number from the state where the account was originally opened, so moving does not change it. Check the number in the Mobile app under Account & Routing # rather than looking up your current state.
