Frequently asked questions

What is an IFSC code?

IFSC (Indian Financial System Code) is an 11-character code that identifies a specific bank branch in India for NEFT, RTGS, and IMPS transfers.

What is the IFSC format?

Four letters for the bank, a zero, then six characters for the branch (e.g. HDFC0000001). Always use the branch IFSC printed on the cheque or passbook.

Is IFSC the same as SWIFT?

No. IFSC is for domestic Indian electronic transfers. SWIFT/BIC is for international wires. Some Indian banks publish both.

Do I need IFSC for UPI?

UPI usually uses a VPA (like name@bank). IFSC is required for NEFT/RTGS and many IMPS / account-number transfers.

How complete is this directory?

We index 180,000+ IFSC codes from the public Razorpay IFSC dataset (compiled from official bank sources). Always confirm with the recipient bank before sending.
