How MXN → USD pricing works

The mid-market rate is the midpoint between what buyers and sellers are currently paying for MXN against USD. It is the rate you see on Google or Reuters, and it is the only rate with no one's margin inside it.

Sending Mexican Pesos to US Dollars normally costs you twice: once in a transfer fee you can see, and once in the margin added to the exchange rate, which you usually cannot. The second is often the larger of the two, which is why a "no fee" transfer is not necessarily the cheapest one.

The payout method matters as well. A bank deposit, a cash pickup and a mobile-wallet credit on the same corridor can carry different rates and clear on different timelines, so compare the amount of US Dollars your recipient actually receives.

Before you convert MXN to USD

Check the rate you are being offered against the mid-market rate for MXN/USD. The gap between the two is the margin, and it is charged whether or not a separate fee appears.

Then check the total: the US Dollars figure at the end, after every fee and the rate margin. Providers present costs differently, and the received amount is the only comparison that survives that.

Finally check how it arrives and when — the payout rail and the settlement time — because the cheapest quote is not always the one that lands in time.

Common questions

What is the real MXN to USD exchange rate?
The real rate is the mid-market rate — the midpoint of current buy and sell prices for MXN against USD, with no margin added. The calculator on this page quotes against that rate, so any difference you see between providers is margin.
Why is my bank's MXN to USD rate worse?
Banks typically apply a margin to the exchange rate rather than charging a visible conversion fee. You are paying for the conversion either way; on a bank transfer the cost is inside the rate, which makes it harder to compare against a provider that quotes the mid-market rate and a separate fee.
How much US Dollars will I get for 20,000 MXN?
It depends on the live rate and on what each provider adds to it. Enter the amount in the calculator above to see the current mid-market conversion from Mexican Pesos to US Dollars alongside what the major providers would deliver on the same amount.
