IDBI IFSC code

Read it off something the bank issued, not from memory. Four sources, in the order worth trying.

The Reserve Bank defines the shape: an IFSC is “a 11-digit code with the first 4 alpha characters representing the bank, and the last 6 characters representing the branch”. The fifth character is a placeholder zero every Indian bank shares.

IDBI does not use one consistent style for those last six characters. Of the codes here, 2,411 are six plain digits — IBKL0000701 is the branch inside IDBI Tower at the World Trade Centre, Cuffe Parade — while 1,311 mix in letters. Both forms are valid, so letters are not automatically a typo.

This trips people up more than any other IDBI quirk. You look up the code you were given, and the branch label is a district or urban co-operative bank. The dataset places such labels inside the IBKL0 range. Separately, IDBI publishes a current-account product for co-operative and regional rural banks with NEFT and RTGS facilities.

The arithmetic is worth sitting with. IDBI publishes “1890+ Branches Across India”, yet this directory holds 3,722 IBKL0 codes — many were never IDBI branches, and others are back-office units rather than counters you can walk into. If the branch name is not the bank you expected, check with the account holder before assuming the code is wrong.

Doing it yourself is free. IDBI’s Advantage Savings schedule, as published February 2026, lists NEFT and RTGS through net or mobile banking as free — matching the RBI instruction that banks “not levy any charges from their savings bank account holders for NEFT funds transfers initiated online”. Ask a branch to key it in and the same schedule charges ₹2 to ₹25 for NEFT by slab, ₹24.50 or ₹49.50 for RTGS, and ₹1 to ₹15 for IMPS, all before GST.

An IFSC will not bring money into India — it is a domestic routing code foreign banks cannot act on. A wire needs IDBI Bank’s SWIFT code, IBKLINBB, plus the correspondent holding IDBI’s account in that currency.

• IDBI’s specimen instruction names the correspondent explicitly — for US dollars, Citibank N.A. New York, SWIFT CITIUS33.
• Beneficiary details asked for: account number with IDBI, the branch and city, and the customer ID. For a deposit, add the type (NRE, NRO or FCNR-B) and the term.
• Nostro currencies listed include USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, CHF, JPY, SGD, AUD, HKD, NOK and AED — sending one of those is one fewer conversion.

The number nobody puts in front of you is the exchange rate, applied after the money has left. Glide shows the rate and the fee before you send, so what lands is what you agreed to.

A failed NEFT comes back. RBI rules require the destination bank to return a transaction it cannot credit “within two hours of completion of the batch”. If neither credit nor return has appeared, the fault is usually in what you typed.

1. 01Read the prefix back character by character: I-B-K-L, then the digit zero. IDBI0 and IBKLO are both dead ends.
2. 02Confirm the last six against the beneficiary’s passbook or app — letters are legitimate here, so do not “correct” them into digits.
3. 03If a co-operative bank’s name comes back, that may well be right. Ask which bank actually holds the account.
4. 04Check the account number for leading zeros a spreadsheet has eaten, then quote the transaction reference to the sending bank.
