SBI IFSC code
Every State Bank of India branch has its own IFSC — an eleven-character code that tells India’s payment rails which of SBI’s 23,000-plus branches to credit. The first five characters, SBIN0, never change. The last six identify a single branch, so a code copied from a different one cannot credit the account you meant.

SBIN0000001 breaks down as SBIN for bank, 0 for res, 000001 for branch.

How to find your State Bank of India IFSC code
Trust the sources SBI prints or publishes itself. A code a sender remembers from an earlier transfer deserves a second look, because SBI has renumbered branches more than once — most heavily after absorbing its five associate banks in 2017.
Check your passbook, statement or chequebook
The Reserve Bank of India notes that a branch’s IFSC sits on the cheque leaf beside its MICR code, and in April 2012 it directed banks to carry both in the passbook and statement of account too.
Use SBI’s own branch locator
The locator on sbi.bank.in searches by state, district, circle, branch name, branch code, PIN code or IFSC.
Search the branch table on this page
Every SBI branch in the RBI dataset has a page here with its IFSC, MICR code and address.
What each part of an SBI IFSC code means
The layout is fixed by the Reserve Bank of India and identical across every Indian bank. SBIN0000001 — the Kolkata Main branch at Samriddhi Bhawan on Strand Road — splits exactly the way every other SBI code does.
- SBIN
- Bank identifier for State Bank of India — never changes
- 0
- Reserved by the RBI, always zero
- 000001
- Branch identifier — unique to one branch
Because the fifth position is always zero, a code with a digit there is malformed. In an ordinary SBI branch code the last six characters are a leading zero followed by five digits, and 26,449 of SBI’s 26,471 codes take exactly that shape.
If your passbook says SBBJ, SBH, SBM, SBP or SBT
State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, Hyderabad, Mysore, Patiala and Travancore all began operating as SBI branches on 1 April 2017, alongside Bharatiya Mahila Bank, and their codes were reissued under the SBIN0 prefix. Later that year SBI listed roughly 1,300 further branches, mostly in the metros, whose names and IFSC codes changed again during rationalisation.
- Ask the account holder for the code on a current passbook or account statement — that is the live one.
- SBI still hosts the e-SBT, e-SBBJ, e-SBH and e-SBP IFSC mapping files on its Merger of Associate Banks page.
- If a code that used to work has started failing, an old associate-bank branch is the first thing to rule out.
When an SBI IFSC is required: NEFT, RTGS and IMPS
India’s domestic account-to-account rails address the beneficiary by account number plus branch IFSC. Which rail your payment takes is decided by the amount and by how quickly it has to land.
| Rail | Amount | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| NEFT | No minimum | 24×7×365, settled in 48 half-hourly batches |
| RTGS | ₹2,00,000 minimum, no ceiling | 24×7×365 since 14 December 2020 |
SBI’s corporate FAQ states that an RTGS which cannot be credited is returned to the remitting bank within two hours, and a failed NEFT within two hours of its batch. IMPS is the exception: SBI’s own IMPS FAQ says the service can be addressed with the beneficiary’s mobile number and MMID instead of an account number and IFSC.
Sending money to an SBI account from abroad
An IFSC moves money between branches inside India; it does not cross a border. A wire from overseas is routed by SWIFT/BIC first, and SBI’s eight-character BIC is SBININBB in Mumbai — but which code the sender should quote depends on the size of the transfer.
Alongside it, SBI asks for the beneficiary’s eleven-digit account number with a non-zero first digit, their name and address, the SBI branch code or IFSC, and the purpose of the remittance. As published in August 2026, SBI levies ₹50 in India for handling an inward remittance; the sending bank’s fee and exchange-rate margin are separate.
India took in an estimated $129 billion in remittances in 2024, more than any other country. Whichever service carries the money and whatever it charges, the SWIFT code decides which bank receives it and the IFSC decides which SBI branch is finally credited — so both belong on the transfer instruction.

Frequently asked questions
What is the IFSC code of State Bank of India?
There is no single one. Every SBI branch has its own IFSC, and all of them begin with SBIN0 followed by a six-character branch identifier. SBIN0000001 belongs to the Kolkata Main branch at Samriddhi Bhawan, 1 Strand Road. Use the code printed on the beneficiary’s own passbook or account statement.
Is the SBI IFSC code the same for all branches?
No. Only the SBIN0 prefix is shared. The last six characters identify one specific branch out of more than 23,000, so a code taken from a different branch does not describe the account you are trying to pay. SBI says an NEFT or RTGS credit it cannot apply is returned to the remitting bank within two hours.
What is the SWIFT code for State Bank of India?
SBININBB, registered in Mumbai. For inward remittances SBI asks senders to use SBININBBFXD — its Foreign Department in Kolkata — for amounts up to USD 25,000 or equivalent, and the beneficiary branch’s own SWIFT code above that. The IFSC is still needed so SBI knows which branch to credit.
What is the IFSC code for an SBI credit card payment?
SBIN00CARDS. SBI Card’s own NEFT instructions tell you to add the card as a beneficiary using that IFSC and to enter your sixteen-digit credit card number where the account number goes. It is not a branch code, so it cannot be used for an ordinary account transfer.
My passbook shows an SBBJ or SBT IFSC code. Does it still work?
Look up the current code before you use it. State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, Hyderabad, Mysore, Patiala and Travancore became SBI branches on 1 April 2017 and their codes were reissued under SBIN0, so the code in an old passbook is not the one SBI publishes today. SBI still hosts e-SBBJ, e-SBH, e-SBP and e-SBT IFSC mapping files on its Merger of Associate Banks page.
How do I find my SBI branch code from the IFSC?
Use SBI’s branch locator, which searches in both directions: give it a branch code and it returns the IFSC, or give it an IFSC and it returns the branch. If you have neither to hand, the same locator will find the branch from a state, district, PIN code or branch name.
Do I need an IFSC to receive money from abroad into my SBI account?
Usually yes, in addition to the SWIFT code. SBI’s foreign inward remittance format asks the sender for the beneficiary’s account number, the receiving SBI branch with its code, and the SWIFT/BIC. The branch identifier is what tells SBI which of its branches actually holds the account.
Is sbi.bank.in the real State Bank of India website?
Yes. The Reserve Bank of India directed banks to migrate their public websites to the exclusive .bank.in domain by 31 October 2025, and sbi.co.in now redirects there. A site on any other domain offering to “update” your IFSC or account details is worth treating as a phishing attempt.
